Nintendo released its annual financial results today for the fiscal year ending March 2026, and the Switch 2’s launch year numbers are exactly what you’d expect from a Nintendo console launch, despite what the internet would have you believe. From its June 5, 2025 release through the end of March 2026, the Switch 2 sold 19.86 million units worldwide.

On the software side, Mario Kart World is unsurprisingly the runaway leader. Nintendo’s open-world racer launched alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025 and sold 14.70 million units across the same window, which works out to roughly a 74 percent attach rate against the install base. That’s the kind of dominance you almost never see this early in a console’s life cycle. Donkey Kong Bananza lands in second at 4.52 million since its July 17, 2025 release, followed by Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at 3.94 million since October 16, 2025, Pokémon Pokopia at 2.41 million since its March 5, 2026 release, and Kirby Air Riders at 1.87 million since November 20, 2025. Pokopia stands out in that group, since it had less than a month inside the FY26 window that ended March 31, 2026. Nintendo confirmed in the same report that the game has since crossed 4 million units in five weeks on the market.

The original Switch isn’t done yet, either. Nintendo moved another 3.80 million Switch units in FY26, and Switch software still pushed 136.91 million units for the year. With the Switch 2 capable of playing Switch games through backwards compatibility, the install base for both platforms is effectively merging into one massive audience for Nintendo to keep shipping games to.

Personally, I’m not surprised by any of these numbers. The Switch 2 had one of the most anticipated console launches in recent memory, and Mario Kart World was always going to be popular if you just look at the success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The bigger question now is whether Nintendo can keep this kind of momentum going through year two, with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Star Fox, and Splatoon Raiders all on deck for the next few months.
