Three months after its surprise reveal at the June State of Play, Until Dawn 2 has a release date. The date was announced during today’s State of Play, with Firesprite’s Stu Tilley filling in the details on the PlayStation Blog: the sequel launches on PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027, and preorders for both the Standard and Digital Deluxe Editions open September 10. The 2015 original came from Supermassive Games, but this one is in the hands of Firesprite, the Liverpool studio Sony acquired in 2021 and the team behind Horizon Call of the Mountain.
The story is being written in partnership with AdHoc Studio, the former Telltale Games developers behind Dispatch, and Firesprite is promising rich characters, tough decisions, and, in its own words, more than a few gruesome deaths. When Dispatch crossed two million copies last November, I said I wanted to see more from AdHoc Studio even if it wasn’t a second season of Dispatch. Helping write a Sony horror sequel counts. In my review, I called Dispatch one of the very best the genre has to offer, if not the best, and singled out AdHoc’s sharp writing and memorable characters.
The new trailer opens with Dead True, a crew of fake ghost hunting YouTubers and their chicken companion, shooting an episode at Blackwood Sanitorium about the tragic events of 12 years earlier. That’s the same Blackwood from the original game, which I said back in 2024 was surprisingly enjoyable and less cheesy than you might think. Izzy (Sarah Catherine Hook), the team’s new intern, uncovers something there that upends their plans, and a run-in at HorrorCon in Sydney with Yoona (Gia Kim), the survivor of a supernatural attack, points the crew toward Akishima Island, a remote South Pacific island that’s been abandoned since its luxury resort mysteriously shut down in the 1970s.
The rest of the trailer runs through the kind of decisions players will be making, starting with Owen (Dacre Montgomery), Dead True’s cocky star, who has to choose between following a signal to help his missing friend Nate (Spence Moore II) or detouring across a rickety bridge to investigate a strangely lively bar. Mina (Camila Senna), the crew’s conflicted co-host, gets a demand from the network for a ritual sacrifice, live on camera, and you can either sacrifice the chicken to keep the bosses happy or set it free and offer up your own blood for the ritual instead.
Dr. Hill (Peter Stormare) is also returning, and the preorder bonuses are built entirely around him: an Until Dawn classic outfit, an Akishima Island holiday outfit, and Dr. Hill collector’s bobbleheads hidden throughout the game. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds the Y2K Neon Vibes Pack, which dresses all eight members of Dead True (Owen, Mina, Nate, Reagan, Izzy, Luke, Josie, and Cameron) in neon costumes, along with Diorama of Death, a mode that replays every fatal outcome as a vignette from a new angle. Firesprite hasn’t shared pricing for either edition yet.
Until Dawn 2 launches January 28, 2027, on PlayStation 5, and preorders open September 10. The announcement only mentions PlayStation 5, so there’s no word on a PC version yet, even though the 2024 remake of the original shipped on both PlayStation 5 and PC.
