Sony has confirmed that State of Play returns on Thursday, September 3, and this time we’re getting a double feature, with two broadcasts airing back-to-back starting at 6:00 AM Pacific (9:00 AM Eastern) on YouTube and Twitch. The first show is a standard State of Play featuring updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and third-party partners, and it concludes with an extended look at the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Revelation from Square Enix.
Immediately following the main broadcast, a new episode of State of Play Japan takes over, once again hosted by voice actor Yuki Kaji. The Japan-focused show promises deep dives into upcoming games from studios in Japan and Asia, including new gameplay and announcements. The main State of Play airs in English with Japanese subtitles available, while State of Play Japan airs in Japanese with English subtitles. Funny enough, this is the second year in a row that Sony has picked September 3, since last year’s date went to a dedicated 007 First Light broadcast.
As for the Final Fantasy VII Revelation segment, I’m not going to pretend to be neutral here, because I’m obviously very excited. I currently consider Final Fantasy VII Rebirth the best game I’ve ever played, and in my review, I called it one of the finest gaming experiences I’ve ever had, so an extended look at the finale of the remake trilogy is at the top of the list for me. We got a fresh taste just last week when a new trailer unleashed the Weapons, and Revelation is set to close out the trilogy in Spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC. Whether the extended look finally locks in a firm release date remains to be seen, but I’ll be up at 6:00 AM for this one either way.
