It isn’t every month that a game from 2012 tops the PlayStation 5 charts, but that’s exactly what Call of Duty: Black Ops II pulled off in July’s download charts, finishing #1 in both the U.S. and Canada and EU regions. Its 2010 predecessor sits right behind it. The one-two punch follows Activision shadow-dropping ports of both classics on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on July 9, the first time either game has been playable on modern Sony hardware, with campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies all included. Nostalgia, it turns out, downloads well.
The rest of the PlayStation 5 chart is crowded with fresh releases and a few stubborn holdovers. EA Sports College Football 27 landed at #3 in the U.S. and Canada while sitting out the EU chart entirely, which makes sense for a sport that barely exists outside North America. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced took #4 in the U.S. and #3 in the EU after its July 9 launch, adding chart dominance to a remake that has already sold three million copies, while Palworld charted in both regions after exiting Early Access with its 1.0 update. Halo: Campaign Evolved cracked the top 10 on both sides, a sentence that still reads strangely on a PlayStation chart. Co-op horror is having a moment too, with Escape the Backrooms in the top 10 of both regions, The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu charting on both sides, and the EU squeezing in a second Backrooms game with Backrooms: Escape Together. Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game showed up in the U.S. after its July 2 launch, Echoes of Aincrad made a U.S.-only appearance, and 007 First Light is still hanging around from its May launch after its first big patch added new missions in July.
Over on PlayStation 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II claimed #1 in both regions there as well, ending Red Dead Redemption 2’s months-long run at the top of those charts. Rockstar’s western slipped to #4 in the U.S. and Canada and #3 in the EU, with Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Batman: Arkham Knight, and the usual multiplayer staples like Gang Beasts, A Way Out, and Mortal Kombat X filling out the rest.
PlayStation VR2 crowned a new leader as well, with I Am Cat clawing its way to #1 in both regions, followed by Synapse in the U.S. and Job Simulator in the EU. Beat Saber slipped another spot in the U.S. after losing official support on the platform. On the free-to-play side, Roblox and Fortnite simply swapped places across the Atlantic, with Roblox on top in the U.S. and Canada and Fortnite leading the EU, while Marvel Rivals took #3 in the U.S. without appearing in the EU top 10 at all.
