Sword Art Online fans finally have a sanctioned way to get trapped in the death game, as Bandai Namco launched Echoes of Aincrad today on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The action JRPG drops players into the series’ infamous premise as their own character, a regular user who logs into the world’s first VRMMORPG only to discover there’s no exit, and dying in the game means dying for real. While other trapped players hide or turn on each other, your character steps up to free everyone, climbing the floating castle of Aincrad through quests, missions, and boss fights along the way.
As I noted when the game was announced, the most interesting thing about Echoes of Aincrad is that it doesn’t lean on Kirito and the series’ established cast, instead letting players create their own avatar and live out the Aincrad fantasy themselves. Character creation offers a wide variety of options, and the customization continues as you level up, with attribute management shaping your build and playstyle. Development is handled by Game Studio, whose recent credits include Synduality: Echo of Ada and Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai.
You won’t be climbing the castle alone, though, since the game pairs you with a partner for your outings, each one bringing a different skill to support your approach. A switch mode adds a strategic layer to combat, letting your ally step in to cover for you or fight on their own terms against their own targets. Beyond that, Bandai Namco says survival comes down to fundamentals, with dodging, parrying, and well-timed actions deciding fights against Aincrad’s tougher enemies.
Echoes of Aincrad runs $69.99 for the Standard Edition, while the Deluxe Edition adds an expansion DLC, a Starter Pack, and early access to a Death Game Mode, and the Ultimate Edition piles on bonus app content and exclusive cosmetics. We covered the full edition breakdown, including the physical Aincrad Edition with its beanie and wall scroll, alongside the story trailer back in April. With the Sword Art Online game franchise sitting at over ten million units sold, Bandai Namco clearly isn’t done with Aincrad, and now players get to see if being the hero themselves beats watching Kirito do it.
