As usual, everyone wondered what major announcement Nintendo would use to close out its Nintendo Direct. Some were hoping for a new 3D Mario game, which already seemed unlikely because of Donkey Kong Bananza, while others, like me, were hoping to see what Monolith Soft has been working on in the form of a new Xenoblade entry. The answer today, though, was the next Fire Emblem game, titled Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. It’s set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, and it takes the Fire Emblem series into the arena.

Today’s debut trailer gave us a glimpse of the story, characters, and iconic turn-based strategy gameplay. The trailer’s description ends with “Who’s that at the end of the trailer?” and fans of the series will connect the dots that Fortune’s Weave likely takes place in the same universe as Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The character we see is Sothis, but in adult form, as she was a child in Three Houses. The question remains, though, whether Fortune’s Weave is going to be a prequel or a sequel, because the presence of adult Sothis leaves more questions than answers.
