Looks like Geralt isn’t ready to retire just yet. CD Projekt Red announced today that a third expansion to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming in 2027, titled Songs of the Past. The expansion will return players to the role of Geralt of Rivia for a new adventure, and it’s heading to PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC. More details are due in late summer 2026.
The most interesting part of the expansion is that CD Projekt Red is co-developing it with Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio made up of industry veterans who worked on the original Witcher 3. That setup makes a lot of sense given how busy CD Projekt Red’s main teams currently are.
Per the studio’s most recent quarterly numbers, there are 447 developers working on The Witcher 4, with additional teams on Cyberpunk 2, Project Sirius, and Project Hadar. Spinning up a full in-house team to revisit a decade-old game seems silly, so handing it to a studio full of people who already know the game is the right move.
Even though it might seem wild that The Witcher 3 is getting a new expansion, considering it launched in 2015, it makes sense as a leadup to The Witcher 4. Borderlands did something similar to bridge the gap between Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3. It gets players revisiting the world and possibly draws in a new audience, especially since there was a series on Netflix (even though we don’t like talking about it). Besides, The Witcher 3 has sold more than 60 million copies as of last year’s milestone announcement, so a paid expansion will bring in some big bucks.
