Undead Labs is inviting players to sign up for alpha playtests of State of Decay 3. Brant Fitzgerald, co-creator of the franchise, shared a new trailer announcing the opportunity, calling on survivors to fight back against the blood plague, reclaim lost ground, and build up a community of survivalists. Those interested can sign up at playtest.stateofdecay.com.

State of Decay 3 has been in the works for a while now, first debuting back in 2020 with a cinematic trailer. The game received a more substantial showing at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2024, but a release date still hasn’t been announced. It’s being developed by Undead Labs and published by Xbox Game Studios.

From what we know so far, State of Decay 3 is an open-world survival game set years after a zombie apocalypse has nearly wiped out humanity. An evolving zombie threat is overtaking the landscape, and players will need to push back the blood plague, reclaim resources, and carve out a life for their community. The game supports both single-player and online co-op with cross-platform multiplayer, so you’ll be able to bring friends along regardless of platform.

No release date or window was shared alongside the alpha playtest announcement, and the game’s Steam page still lists “To be announced.” But the fact that Undead Labs is opening up alpha testing suggests things are moving along. With the Xbox Games Showcase set for June 7, there’s a good chance we’ll learn more about the game there.
