State of Decay 3 is moving into closed beta playtests before the end of 2026, giving the community its biggest hands-on look at the zombie survival sequel ahead of its 2027 launch. The expansion builds on the testing program Undead Labs kicked off in April, when alpha playtest signups opened for a first wave that was intentionally limited in scope.
According to Undead Labs, that initial round gave the team its first real look at how players interact with the game’s systems in the wild, and the studio says it has been overwhelmed by the positivity and feedback. Highlights from alpha testers include engaging combat against multiple freaks, improvements to the world’s lighting, weather, and overall visuals, cosmetic additions like varied clothing options, glasses, and beards, and smoother, more reactive character movement.
Creative Director Kevin Patzelt says the plan is to keep widening the circle from here, bringing in more players and more platforms as the game gets closer to launch. “We’re going to be expanding our alpha and then closed beta to more players over time, this is our largest map ever and with untethered multiplayer, we really need to take the opportunities to stress-test and fine-tune,” Patzelt said, adding that anyone who doesn’t get access right away will have more opportunities throughout the year, whether they’re familiar with the series or brand new to it.
Undead Labs frames every playtest wave as feeding directly back into development, from balancing co-op combat encounters to fine-tuning how the game’s new permadeath systems ripple through a community of survivors, with narrative systems built specifically so that losing a longtime survivor carries real weight. For those catching up, State of Decay 3 sends players into a much larger, truly shared open world than previous entries, set against a harsh wilderness with a heavier emphasis on managing more communities and survivors alongside deeper building and systems management.
