Microsoft’s Xbox had a rough start to the year. First, there were rumors that some of its major titles were going multiplatform, which had some die-hard fans thinking the world was ending. Some of those rumors were partly true, as four Xbox first-party games have since launched on PlayStation and/or Nintendo Switch. Then, the company shut down four studios it had acquired, including Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks. Xbox’s vision has become a bit muddled in recent years, especially as the PlayStation 5 continues to pull away in sales compared to the Xbox Series X|S.
Some would say that today’s Xbox Games Showcase was the brand’s most important in years, and it mostly delivered. While many of these games will also launch on PlayStation, Xbox had a much more compelling and interesting showcase than Summer Game Fest. More importantly, Xbox shone the spotlight on games from its first-party developers, including the recently acquired Activision Blizzard.
