Mouthwashing Hits Consoles and Game Pass, Gets a Movie Deal

Mouthwashing, the 2024 space horror game from developer Wrong Organ and publisher Critical Reflex, is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, XBOX One, XBOX Series X|S, and Switch, along with XBOX on PC, two years after its debut on Steam. The console version is priced at $12.99 and is also included with Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass starting today. Although it wasn’t part of the original October Wave 2 lineup XBOX announced last week, Microsoft added it to the list on October 20 following its reveal at the ID@XBOX showcase. Along with the new platforms, Wrong Organ and Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems confirmed that a Mouthwashing feature film is in development.

The film is being produced by Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Vince Cheng under their Crooked Highway banner, with Derrickson best known for Doctor Strange and The Black Phone. Karyn Kusama, whose credits include Jennifer’s Body and Yellowjackets, is set to direct, while Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who wrote Kusama’s The Invitation, are handling the script. Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, and there’s no word yet on casting or a release window.

For those unfamiliar with it, Mouthwashing follows the five-person crew of the Tulpar, a Pony Express interplanetary freighter that goes off course and leaves everyone stranded with dwindling supplies. The crew faces starvation and isolation while dealing with paranoia and hallucinations, and the story is less about whether they survive than when they’ll die and who is to blame. The game launched on PC in 2024 and currently holds an 88 on Metacritic and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam. It went on to win Best Narrative and Players’ Choice at the Horror Game Awards, as well as Best Hidden Gem at the New York Game Awards. According to figures supplied with the announcement, Mouthwashing has sold nearly one million copies on PC since launch, with over 60 million views on YouTube and close to one billion views on TikTok. If you’d rather play it on Steam, Mouthwashing is also 40 percent off at $7.79 through November 3.
