It’s been almost nine months since Capcom announced Mega Man: Dual Override at The Game Awards, and the new trailer from gamescom Opening Night Live finally delivers the first extended look at how the twelfth mainline entry actually plays. The classic series returns in 2027 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, XBOX One, XBOX Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC, arriving the same year the franchise celebrates its 40th anniversary.

The trailer confirms Proto Man is returning as a playable character alongside Mega Man, complete with his own unique abilities and a distinct playstyle. The new Override system lets both robots temporarily unleash power beyond their normal capabilities, though the boost comes at a cost. When Override runs out, you’ll suffer a temporary drop in performance, so knowing exactly when to activate it and how to use that window will matter. Timing is everything.

Customization goes deeper with the new Custom Chip system, which lets you install chips that grant additional abilities like rapid-fire, a protective shield bubble, and hovering, tailoring either character to your preferred playstyle. Special weapons return as well, converted from the abilities of defeated Robot Masters as always, with each use consuming energy. The trailer teases one of them in action, unleashing a devastating charge attack that doubles as an aerial dash.

As for the bosses, Dual Override features eight new Robot Masters, with the firework-themed Twinkle Girl making her debut in the trailer. Longtime fans may also recognize what appears to be Astro Man from Mega Man 8 flying into frame, and Capcom is openly dangling the question of whether other classic Robot Masters will return. Capcom also kicked off a boss design contest back in December, giving fans the chance to help Dr. Wily create a new Robot Master for the game.

Since the Blue Bomber’s debut in 1987, the franchise has sold over 43 million units worldwide, and Dual Override will arrive at least nine years after 2018’s Mega Man 11. Wishlists are open now on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Steam, and Capcom is running a limited-time franchise sale that includes Mega Man 11 for $4.49 and the recently released Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection for $29.99.
