We’ve known since June that Final Fantasy VII Revelation would close out the remake trilogy in spring 2027, and the new trailer Square Enix debuted at gamescom Opening Night Live gives us another look at that finale in motion. The centerpiece is the return of the Weapons, the enormous guardians that emerge to defend a world in crisis, making no distinction between friend and foe as they wreak destruction on the planet and its people.
Anyone who played the original Final Fantasy VII will remember the Weapons as a late-game element, and Revelation is rebuilding them as standout battles fought on desert sands, in mid-air dogfights, and at the bottom of the sea. Some of them also appear in ultra-challenging endgame battles designed as an homage to their original forms. Cloud and company will be fighting them while also trying to stop Sephiroth, who is nearing godhood as Meteor descends toward the planet.
The trailer also revealed the new Summon Typhon and showed off open-world exploration via parachute, grappling hook, and Chocobo mounts. New to Revelation is the FITS system, which introduces outfits that grant new abilities and specialized roles evoking classic Final Fantasy jobs, and the trailer put Cloud and Tifa in their Warrior and Black Mage FITS to demonstrate.

Aboard the Highwind, the entire planet is freely explorable, letting you parachute down anywhere with a seamless transition from air to land. The party will need to divide and conquer, choosing where to go, who to help, and in what order, with decisions along the journey impacting aspects of the characters’ stories. The series’ hybrid battle system returns as well, letting you switch between real-time action and Tactical Mode, now expanded with new playable characters, Cid and Vincent, and abilities.
In my Final Fantasy VII Rebirth review, I said the game ranks as one of the finest video gaming experiences I’ve ever had, and that if Remake served as the appetizer and Rebirth as the main course, I fully expected the final game to serve as a delightful dessert. I also wondered in that review what Square Enix could possibly deliver after Rebirth, which felt like as good as it gets. As someone who spent over 217 hours earning Rebirth’s Platinum trophy, I’ll happily find out for myself.

Both Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are out now on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC for anyone catching up before the finale, and both include Streamlined Progression options like unlimited HP and MP, an always-full ATB gauge, and easier weapon ability acquisition. There’s a reason to keep your save files, too. Save data from Remake Intergrade unlocks the Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia in Revelation, while Rebirth save data unlocks the Phoenix Summon Materia.
Whether Revelation can top Rebirth remains to be seen, but at the very least, returning players will have two extra summons waiting for them. Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches in spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and XBOX on PC.
