Marvel’s Wolverine had its turn in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con today, where Insomniac Games debuted a new story trailer and filled the panel with reveals, including a MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls suit crossover, composer details, and a prequel comic. As we mentioned in our SDCC preview, actors Liam McIntyre (Logan) and Krizia Bajos (Jean Grey) joined Insomniac’s leadership on stage to walk through the game’s story ahead of its September launch.
The story trailer opens with an enraged Logan confronting Jean Grey in what Insomniac describes as an abrupt moment of vulnerability, before spotlighting The Hand as one of the game’s new enemy factions. Lady Deathstrike, who surfaced in last week’s Ain’t No Hero trailer, is now confirmed as one of the game’s primary villains, and new art shows Logan squaring off against The Hand in their trademark red garb. The two share a history that players will uncover as the story unfolds.
On the crossover front, Insomniac and Arc System Works are trading suits between their two Marvel games. Wolverine’s stylized look from MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is coming to Marvel’s Wolverine as an unlockable earned through game progression on day one, while the Battle Reborn suit from Insomniac’s game heads to the fighter, free for all players starting September 1. MARVEL Tōkon launches August 6 on PlayStation 5 and PC, so the suit arrives a few weeks into that game’s life.
Award-winning composer David Fleming is handling the music for Marvel’s Wolverine, with a score built around musical cues that shift dynamically alongside Logan’s journey around the globe. A track from the game is already available on streaming services, and the full soundtrack releases on August 28.
Fans looking for backstory can also pick up a digital prequel comic written by Insomniac narrative director Walt Williams, with art by Luke Ross and a cover from Iban Coello, following Logan’s fraught relationship with members of Team X on a mission to protect mutantkind. Physical copies are an SDCC-exclusive giveaway, though the comic can be read online via Marvel Unlimited. The game itself spent years mostly out of sight before gameplay finally surfaced last September, when we came away impressed by the visceral, violent combat. Marvel’s Wolverine arrives September 15, only on PlayStation 5.
