After announcing that The Elder Scrolls Online will require a monthly subscription, Bethesda has admitted that it hopes it can persuade Microsoft to not require an Xbox Live Gold to play the MMORPG on the Xbox One.
The company is currently pushing Microsoft to make the game available to non-Xbox Live Gold subscribers, essentially removing the additional pay wall to access The Elder Scrolls Online. Though it may seem that the subscription-based model is dying in the MMORPG genre, The Elder Scrolls Online is opting for it so that customers “don’t have any gates on the content,” and don’t have to worry about spending additional money on features. In addition, it allows Bethesda and ZeniMax to continue pumping out content on a regular basis for the title through patches.
Unfortunately there’s no confirmation as to whether or not Microsoft will be persuaded. It will be interesting to see if Bethesda follows the same path with Sony and the PlayStation Plus requirement in order to play online. It’s without a doubt that gamers are turned off at the idea of having to pay two subscription fees in order to play a game on a console, when players could just opt for the PC version and simply pay one.
