Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection just landed its biggest update yet. Today’s patch finally adds Krossplay, the long-requested cross-platform online play feature, alongside online support for 2-on-2 modes and Variable Refresh Rate support across most platforms. The timing is solid, with Mortal Kombat II hitting theaters on May 8.
Krossplay lets PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC players match up against each other in both Quick Play and Online Arcade modes, with the room code system from a previous update making it easy to invite friends across hardware. The feature is off by default and can be toggled on under Online Options. There’s one technical caveat: Mortal Kombat Trilogy isn’t available for online Krossplay matches when playing on original Switch consoles.
Four games in the Kollection now support 2-on-2 online matches, where one player controls a team of two fighters against an opponent doing the same. Those games are Ultimate MK3 (Arcade), Ultimate MK3 (SNES), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PS1), and Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade). These modes were previously offline-only, with Digital Eclipse making a knowing nod to the creative workarounds some players had figured out in the meantime. Now they’re officially supported, and the modes are clearly marked in online rooms with a “2 on 2” designation.
Variable Refresh Rate support is the third big addition, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch 2 (in handheld mode), and PC. With VRR turned on, the games can sync to the non-standard frame rates that the original arcade hardware ran at, which was usually around 53 Hz. The result is a more accurate presentation that some players prefer, and Digital Eclipse notes you may also notice an improvement in input latency. The feature is opt-in and requires compatible hardware on your end.
The patch also fixes the connection strength indicator for online games, stops Kombat Kard replays from disappearing, and restores some missing localized text. Digital Eclipse confirmed that Krossplay, 2v2 Online, and VRR are the final three major features currently planned for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, though bug fixes and smaller improvements will continue. Considering the game launched in October 2025 with a long list of issues that earned it a Mixed rating on Steam, it’s good to see Digital Eclipse stick the landing on the post-launch roadmap.
