XBOX announced a new feature today that lets disc owners claim a digital entitlement for the games they already own, with XBOX Insiders set to begin testing on August 31. Microsoft is framing the move as part of its broader commitment to game preservation, and the short version is that your discs keep working exactly as they always have, but now they can also unlock the benefits of a digital copy.
Claiming an entitlement works by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, the digital perks kick in, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while the physical disc continues to function normally. Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support the feature, and Microsoft says it’s starting with thousands of titles and will continue adding more over time. Not every game will be there on day one.
The announcement lands in a year that hasn’t been kind to physical media, something we said when Control Resonant’s physical release slipped to October, pointing to Sony ending disc production for new games as the biggest hit of them all. XBOX, meanwhile, has spent the summer expanding where its games can be played, giving some Ubisoft games on XBOX free PC versions and bringing original XBOX games to PC for the first time. A disc that doubles as a digital license now joins that initiative.
For now, the feature is limited to the XBOX Insider Program, which you can join by downloading the XBOX Insider Hub on XBOX One, XBOX Series X|S, or a Windows PC. Microsoft hasn’t published a list of supported titles or said when the feature will roll out beyond Insiders, so expect some trial and error when testing opens next week.
