Pirate survival game Windrose is heading to the Ashlands this winter in its first major content update, which developer Kraken Express teased with a new trailer during today’s Triple-i Initiative showcase. Ashlands adds new main and side missions, new factions, a new ship to command, and a new boss to defeat, along with an expanded map featuring new areas like a long-abandoned Spanish colony. Kraken Express says the update will also improve combat, gameplay, and NPC behavior, though an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Windrose launched into Early Access on PC on April 14 and sold over one million copies in six days, and it went on to pass two million copies sold in its first month. The co-op survival adventure has players sailing, looting, and crafting their way through an alternate Age of Piracy, moving between their ship and their settlement on shore, boarding enemy vessels, and recruiting NPCs for their crew.
At launch, Kraken Express estimated the game would spend another 1.5 to 2.5 years in Early Access, with the full release expected to have roughly 50 percent more content. We enjoyed our time with the Windrose demo, and as we said back in April, there’ll probably be even more to dig into by the time we set sail.
