In what is arguably the most unexpected announcement of 2025 in the gaming industry, Nintendo has introduced Virtual Boy to Nintendo Classics. Not only are 14 of the strangest Nintendo games ever created heading to Nintendo Classics, but we’ll also need to purchase a Virtual Boy accessory to play them. It’ll be available in two forms: a $99.99 option that resembles the original Virtual Boy but uses the Switch or Switch 2 as its display, and a more affordable $24.99 cardboard version. Both will allow users to enter the world of stereoscopic 3D and experience the strange Virtual Boy games like Teleroboxer and Galactic Pinball.
Virtual Boy might be one of Nintendo’s most obscure failures many have forgotten. It originally released in 1995 and was short-lived, with support ending just a year later. It boasted a red monochrome display and was rather uncomfortable to use. I still remember it hurting my eyes, and it was more of a unique experience than something you’d want to sit and play.
Virtual Boy will be added to the Nintendo Classics library on February 17, 2026, and you’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to purchase either of the Virtual Boy accessories.
