With all the turmoil surrounding Ubisoft over the past year, from restructuring and layoffs to questions about the company’s future, the last thing I expected to see today was an announcement for a Monopoly game. But here we are. Ubisoft has revealed Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains, a team-based twist on the classic board game launching June 11 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, PC via the Ubisoft Store, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, and GeForce NOW. A full reveal is set for April 29.

Ubisoft’s last Star Wars outing was Star Wars Outlaws, which I reviewed when it launched in 2024. Going from an open-world action-adventure to a digital board game is quite the pivot, but at least the Star Wars license is being put to use.

The game puts a competitive spin on Monopoly with 2v2 and 3v3 modes where players draft teams from a roster of iconic Star Wars heroes and villains, including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, and Darth Maul. Each character has distinct abilities that can shape strategy and turn the tide of a match, which is a pretty interesting layer to add on top of Monopoly’s usual formula. The board features locations from across the Star Wars saga with reimagined special tiles, dice challenges, and dynamic GO events that introduce game-altering twists.

Personally, I’m curious to see how well the hero abilities and team compositions actually play out. Monopoly games tend to drag on forever, so adding meaningful strategic choices through character picks could either make it a lot more engaging or turn every family game night into a heated argument about Darth Vader being overpowered. Either way, it’ll probably work for a casual audience.
