LEGO’s next gaming set is a 1,911-piece, near 1:1 scale replica of the original PlayStation console, complete with a brick-built controller that plugs into the front and Power and Open buttons that actually press. The LEGO Group and Sony revealed the LEGO PlayStation, set 72306, during today’s State of Play, and it goes on sale October 1 for LEGO Insiders and through PlayStation Direct before opening up to everyone on October 4 at $179.99.
The finished console measures 10.5 inches wide, 7.5 inches deep, and 2.5 inches high, and the set is rated 18+ like LEGO’s other adult-oriented display builds. The controller is the original 1994 design with no analog sticks, and Ape Escape, one of the two games referenced inside the set, was the first PlayStation game that required the DualShock’s analog sticks to play.
Opening the console reveals two hidden dioramas that can stay tucked inside or be pulled out and displayed separately. One is a miniature track with scaled-down cars from Gran Turismo, the 1997 original from a series that eventually got around to adding my actual car, and the other is an island scene from 1999’s Ape Escape with a swappable red or blue light on the monkey’s helmet. Sony says builders will also spot hidden details from PlayStation’s history throughout the build.
The set joins LEGO’s run of console and arcade replicas that began with the NES in 2020 and most recently produced the LEGO Game Boy, which launched on October 1 last year, exactly one year before this one opens to Insiders. On price, $179.99 for 1,911 pieces lands between the Mario & Standard Kart set at $169.99 for 1,972 pieces and July’s Donkey Kong Arcade at $199.99 for 1,367 pieces.
PlayStation Direct carries the set from October 1 in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, and LEGO Insiders can buy it from LEGO.com and LEGO Stores the same day, with an Insiders membership required for purchases from October 1 through October 3. General sales through LEGO.com, LEGO Stores, and select retailers begin October 4. The LEGO PlayStation is priced at $179.99.
