Rayman made a cameo appearance in 2024’s Game of the Year, Astro Bot, and Ubisoft is now returning the favor with an Astro Bot costume in Rayman Legends Retold, though it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 version. The outfit is free and unlocks on a player’s first visit to Victor Velour, the game’s resident tailor, and Ubisoft says it’s once again a collaboration between Ubisoft Milan, Ubisoft Montpellier, and Team Asobi. Rayman Legends Retold was pushed from October 1 to December 3 last month, and it’s still set for that date on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC at $39.99.

Ubisoft also published a short interview with art and world director Guillaume Arvieu and lead character artist Quentin Chaillet about how the costume came together. Chaillet said the biggest challenge was bringing Astro Bot’s sleek, futuristic look into a universe where designs usually have a handcrafted, organic feel, which meant working the glossy surfaces, metallic details, and glowing blue elements around Rayman’s silhouette, including the large nose, the big shoes, and the lack of arms and legs. Arvieu pointed to the two franchises sharing rich fantasy worlds with varied biomes and an emphasis on fluid movement, and he noted that Rayman holds a special place for players who first met him on the original PlayStation. “They’re both colorful, creative games that are full of surprises and driven by positive values,” he said.

This is the second outfit announcement in a week for Rayman Legends Retold, following the baguette outfits for Rayman and Barbara that Ubisoft framed as a tribute to a fellow Montpellier studio, and the game ships with over 70 costumes in total. As I said after my second preview, the cosmetics I tried were fun to experiment with but nothing novel, and that was before either of these crossover outfits had been announced. In my Astro Bot review, I said part of what makes that game so enjoyable is how it celebrates gaming as a whole, with iconic characters showing up as bots in need of rescuing, and Rayman was one of them.
