Tropico 5 will be available in April 2014, Haemimont Games has revealed to Joystiq in an interview at Gamescom 2013. The dictator sim will be available on PC, Xbox 360, Mac, and Linux.
Speaking of the changes in the latest instalment to the Tropico franchise, CEO Gabriel Dobrev revealed to Joystiq that the biggest addition will be cooperative and competitive multiplayer. In coop mode, players will be able to share resources, electricity, and direct communication, while there will be indirect actions in play since only one player can take a resource and pollution affects the entire island. In other words, players will be sharing a single island in cooperative multiplayer.
Competitive mode will play out like a game of Risk, where each player will have “agenda tasks” and the first player to the designated goal will win.
As for the campaign, we learned previously that Tropico 5 will span the colonial era to the modern times and El Presidente’s heirs will continue the heritage once he’s dictating in the after world. A new feature to the title gives the ability for players to create a constitution for the island that could do a variety of actions, such as keeping foreigners out through a visa program. The developer also revealed that the trading mechanic received a major overhaul.
