When Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream was announced during a Nintendo Direct last year, it was one of those reveals that caught a lot of people off guard. The original Tomodachi Life launched on the 3DS back in 2014, and after over a decade of silence, few expected the series to actually come back. Now with an April 16 release date on Switch, Nintendo has dropped a full overview trailer and made a free demo available on the eShop.
The premise is simple: create Mii characters, drop them on an island, and watch the chaos unfold. You’ll take care of your Miis, introduce them to each other, decorate the island with all sorts of items, and see what kinds of relationships and situations develop. It’s the kind of low-stakes, unpredictable sim that made the original such a hit on the 3DS, and the overview trailer gives a solid look at how everything comes together. Local wireless support lets you send custom Miis and items to a friend, and the game is also compatible with Switch 2.
It’ll be interesting to see how Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream does with Pokémon Pokopia still capturing the attention of so many Switch 2 owners. At the same time, Pokémon Pokopia may have introduced a whole new wave of players to the cozy and casual genre, and if they’re looking for more after building out their Palette Town, Tomodachi Life is right around the corner.
If you’re on the fence, the demo is a great way to see if the Mii life is for you before the full game launches on April 16. Preorders are available now.
