The Tomodachi Life series is finally getting a new game after over 10 years, and it looks to be worth the wait. Nintendo describes the game as quirky fun, and today’s Direct proved that, and then some. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream feels more like a fever dream with just how wild some of the characters’ interactions are. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, this new entry lets players create Mii characters who inhabit a customizable island where almost anything can happen. After creating the Mii characters and helping choose their personalities, little quirks, and living spaces, they can sit back and watch all the weird and wonderful things that can happen between them.

Players do have some control over the Miis, including the ability to place them near one another to help them connect. Dropping Miis near one another will cause all sorts of different scenarios to occur, from talking about their favorite foods to even falling in love. Once they’ve been acquainted, they’ll continue to interact on their own. Players can even choose to have up to eight residents living together as roommates, with chaos surely unfolding once they’re under one roof.

No life sim game would be complete without shops and facilities, and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has that covered too. There’s the Fresh Kingdom food mart for delicacies, while Where & Wear outfits your Mii with all sorts of apparel. Customize rooms and living areas at T&C Reno home supply, while the Marketplace offers a variety of reasonably priced items that change depending on the time of day. Island decorations can be found at Quik Build amenities, while photo ops can be staged for your Miis at Foto-Tomo photography. For a daily summary of what’s going on, players can tune into the MNN news station to see what their Miis have been up to.

For further customization, players can actually create all sorts of things at the Palette House Workshop, including pets for their Mii characters, custom drinks, a favorite TV show, and much more. This game is really embracing the idea of customization and taking it to a new level. Of course, there’s plenty of options to personalize the island too, including landscape items, decorations, and more.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launches on April 16 for Nintendo Switch, and it will also be playable on Nintendo Switch 2. Interestingly, there was no announcement for a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which is strange because this game could really benefit from mouse controls.
