Square Enix never disappoints when naming its AA titles, from Triangle Strategy to Octopath Traveler. While The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales isn’t as obscure as other Square Enix games; it’s still a mouthful to say. The new action-adventure RPG, which made its debut at the Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, comes from Team Asano, the developer behind the Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler series, as well as Triangle Strategy and more. In this new HD-2D adventure, players will take on real-time action combat in the world of Philabieldia. As its name suggests, the game stars a young adventurer named Elliot, who sets off with his fairy companion Faie on a journey to investigate a mysterious set of ruins. Naturally, the simple mission plants the seeds for a grand saga that is woven across time and space.

Elliot can wield seven types of weapons, both melee and ranged, including swords, bows, chains and sickles, and more. Those weapons can be customized with magicite to enhance their attacks, from simple stat boosts to changing their functionality. One example Square Enix provided is the Linked Arrows magicite, which adds an extra hit to foes around your target when Elliot uses his bow. Also, Faie is more than a passive companion—she provides traversal skills, assists in combat, picks up items, and players can alternate control between the two characters. The game also has two-player support, allowing one person to control Elliot and another Faie at the same time.

The game gives off strong 2D The Legend of Zelda vibes, and while it doesn’t release until 2026, you can try a demo starting today on Switch 2. Unfortunately, progress from the demo won’t carry over to launch, but Team Asano is seeking player feedback via a survey at the end. The team has done this before with its other titles, and it has worked out well. I expect another demo will be released closer to the game’s launch, and that it will carry over progress.
