In a surprise announcement, developer Quantic Dream has revealed a multiplayer 3v3 game titled Spellcasters Chronicles. It’s a surprise because Quantic Dream is known for narrative-driven titles such as Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit: Become Human. To clarify how Spellcasters Chronicles came to be, company cofounder David Cage posted a blog stating that Quantic Dream has moved on from being a single-project studio. In doing so, it is embracing the idea of taking risks, challenging itself, and exploring new ways of playing and telling stories.

The strange thing about that statement, though, is that what we can see about Spellcasters Chronicles doesn’t really take any risks. Sure, as a studio, it’s taking a risk by creating a game in a different genre, but the premise appears quite generic. Spellcasters Chronicles is a free-to-play, team-based, third-person action-strategy game in which players take on the role of a mage commander, summoning hordes of creatures and casting powerful spells. Each team comprises three players in what appears to be a MOBA-type map.

I’m being quick to judge based on what I see on the game’s Steam page, but given the disaster of Concord and the overabundance of free-to-play MOBAs that fail to garner a player base, it’s hard to see what Spellcasters Chronicles is doing differently. Then again, games need to be played to know how they feel, and perhaps this title simply nails gameplay and is immensely fun. If you’re interested, a Closed Beta is coming before the end of 2025 and will run over several weekends. There is a web form to sign up for a chance to join the test.

For those who have no interest in multiplayer games, don’t worry. Quantic Dream confirmed it’s still working on Star Wars: Eclipse, which was originally announced in 2021.
