S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Update 2.1 Extends A-Life NPC Range
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s free Zone Lookout update adds adjustable A-Life NPC distance, squad leader fast travel, and PlayStation 5 NPC fixes.
Two months after Update 2.0 moved S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl onto a newer version of Unreal Engine 5 alongside the Cost of Hope expansion, GSC Game World has released Update 2.1, The Zone Lookout, as a free update on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC. The headline change is a new set of presets for A-Life NPC visualization distance, found under Settings, Game, and Visualization options, that controls how far away stalkers and mutants render. GSC recommends sticking with the default preset, since pushing it higher can affect performance and stability, and there’s also a Dynamic preset that scales the range to whatever your PC or console can handle. The number of presets differs depending on your hardware, and the change applies mainly to A-Life NPCs rather than quest and scripted characters. Weapon ballistics and combat audio have been adjusted to match, so depending on your preset, you’ll hear gunfights break out much farther away than before.
Update 2.1 also adds a fast travel system built around the squad leaders you run into across the Zone. Friendly and neutral squad leaders are now marked on your compass, and talking to one lets you pay for a ride to nearby destinations, though only to places you’ve already explored that sit along their travel route, so a squad in Zalissya isn’t taking you all the way to Prypiat. GSC also warns that the service isn’t cheap and that nobody will carry your bag, so you’ll need to be under the weight limit before asking. On the fixes side, the patch addresses NPCs that went missing on PlayStation 5 after Update 2.0, including characters absent from missions like Deal with the Devil and The Assault on the Duga, along with a memory leak caused by placing too many map markers and a bug that required killing every mutant in a single session to earn the Zone’s Deadliest Predator achievement. On consoles, the download shows up as version 1.025.
GSC says this update was planned around player feedback from social media, forums, and reviews, and it ships with a broad set of bug fixes beyond the ones listed above. As I noted when Update 2.0 arrived in August, GSC has kept supporting the game steadily since its rough PC launch in November 2024, and another feedback-driven free update two months after a paid expansion continues that tradition. The full rundown of The Zone Lookout is on GSC’s website.
