GSC Game World locked in an August 20 release date for Cost of Hope back in July, and it turns out the expansion isn’t arriving alone. The studio announced today that Update 2.0 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl launches the same day, free for everyone who owns the game, and it’s a big one, bringing a new version of the engine, a graphics overhaul, new weapons, and a long list of systems changes.
For visuals, the update covers improved lighting with more realistic shadows and reflections, both inside buildings and in underground locations, plus reworked landscapes and foliage to make the Zone feel more organic. A-Life is getting attention too, with more contested points of interest like campfires and bus stops where stalkers and mutants can cross paths. GSC says a batch of under-the-hood fixes also addresses enemies shooting or throwing objects through walls, along with unexpected overpopulation in certain areas.
Update 2.0 introduces Custom Rules as well, letting players adjust individual difficulty settings to build anything from a forgiving survival experience to a hardcore one, on top of the Master difficulty and optional Expedition mode added in earlier updates. Three types of binoculars are joining the Zone, each with different technology and functionality, and you can find them out in the world or buy them from certain traders. Fog is also being promoted from a weather effect to a proper gameplay mechanic that reduces visibility and hearing for stalkers and enemies alike, the PDA gains a Statistics page, and Bloodsuckers and Fleshes can now look different depending on their habitat.

As for the arsenal, four new weapons are on the way: the Arev assault rifle, the GP3A and SKP designated marksman rifles, and the Fora-230 submachine gun, with a unique variant of one of them hidden somewhere in the Zone. New optics include a 3x scope for Western-bloc weapons and a red dot sight for Eastern-bloc weapons, and offset aiming has been expanded beyond night vision use, giving stalkers more freedom with their loadouts.
All of this lands the same day as Cost of Hope, the game’s first major expansion, which digs into the long-running conflict between Duty and Freedom across new locations, including the Iron Forest, the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and the Spatial Bubble. The expansion is included with the Ultimate Edition or available as a standalone purchase for $29.99, and it heads to PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC. GSC has also launched a dedicated website where players can take a quiz to find their faction, cast a vote, and compete for limited S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-themed prizes. As we’ve noted since the expansion was announced back in March, Heart of Chornobyl had a bit of a rough launch on PC in November 2024, but GSC has kept up steady support ever since, and a free update this size arriving next to a paid expansion fits that pattern. Whether Duty or Freedom wins the community vote remains to be seen, but at the very least, the Zone will be a better-looking place by the time the results roll in.
