When GSC Game World put out the Cost of Hope story trailer back in June, the studio still hadn’t committed to anything more specific than summer, and we pointed out at the time that there wasn’t much runway left to work with. Now, we finally have a date and it’s not much longer of a wait. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope, the first major expansion for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, arrives August 20, 2026 on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC.

Cost of Hope puts players back in the role of Skif, the protagonist of Heart of Chornobyl, with a mysterious PDA signal pulling him into a storyline that runs parallel to the main campaign rather than picking up after it. The story turns on the fraying peace between Duty and Freedom, two of the Zone’s oldest factions, and the expansion opens up two new regions in the Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. New weapons, unexpected allies and enemies, and what GSC calls dozens of hours of content fill it out, with player decisions again shaping the outcome.

Launching the same day is Update 2.0 for Heart of Chornobyl, and it’s free to everyone who already owns the base game. The update moves S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 onto a newer version of Unreal Engine 5 and brings new content and improvements that GSC hasn’t detailed yet. As we mentioned back when the expansion was announced in March, Heart of Chornobyl had a bit of a rough launch on PC in November 2024, though GSC has kept the game on a steady diet of updates and roadmaps since.

GSC hasn’t announced a price for Cost of Hope yet, and more details on both the expansion and Update 2.0 are due in the coming weeks. The expansion serves as the middle chapter of a second S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy, with a third story DLC still unannounced. Wishlisting is open now on Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store.
