S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl had a bit of a rough launch on PC back in November 2024, but developer GSC Game World has continued to support the game with regular updates and hotfixes. After heading to PlayStation 5 last year, the open-world shooter is now getting its first major story expansion. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC this summer.

Cost of Hope puts players back in the shoes of Skif as he navigates events that unfold alongside the main story of Heart of Chornobyl. After installing the DLC, a signal on the PDA will trigger the new storyline as the game progresses. The expansion is described as a massive nonlinear addition packed with dozens of hours of gameplay, featuring new stories, characters, and the same heavy atmosphere of decay that defines the series, with just a flicker of hope breaking through.

The story centers on the tension between two of the Zone’s oldest factions: Duty and Freedom. Duty sees the Zone as a threat that must be contained and destroyed, while Freedom believes it’s a gift worth exploring and harnessing. A fragile peace once held these two factions together, but as these things tend to go, that peace didn’t last. As always, player choices shape what happens next, and the consequences could extend far beyond the Zone itself.

The expansion introduces two new regions. The first is the iconic Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, once abandoned and locked away for decades, now calling stalkers back in. The second is the Iron Forest, a labyrinthine area with maze-like paths and uncharted locations to uncover. Each region comes with its own hub, quests, and activities, along with new weapons and gear to help Skif deal with the mutants, anomalies, and other dangers lurking around every corner.

GSC Game World also noted that Cost of Hope serves as the middle chapter of a “second trilogy” of expansions. Together with a future story DLC that has yet to be revealed, it will form a new narrative arc within the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. saga. More details on the exact release date will be shared soon.
