As we get ready to celebrate Pokémon’s 30th anniversary on February 27, Pokémon Day, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company dropped a surprise on fans. For the first time in over 20 years, Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are returning, and they’re available on the Nintendo Switch starting February 27. Both games are also playable on the Nintendo Switch 2.
The digital-only releases are available in English, French, or Spanish, taking players back to the Kanto region and reuniting them with some of their favorite Pokémon. Longtime fans will surely enjoy taking a trip back to where it all began, while newcomers can experience one of the most iconic games in the franchise. These are Switch versions of the 2004 remakes of the first Pokémon games, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, which were originally released in Japan in 1996. The games feature 151 Pokémon and familiar faces including Brock, Misty, Professor Oak, and Giovanni. Like the Game Boy Advance versions, players can also link up with friends via local co-op on the Switch. Just this time around, they don’t need to use a Game Link Cable like it’s 2004.
Each game is available for $19.99.
Updated: We mistakenly thought the games were already available. The post has been updated to reflect that they don’t release until February 27, 2026.
