The Nintendo Wii U has been off to a slow start, but first-party titles are coming to support the system this year. Pikmin 3 is one of those titles, and will be one of the Wii U’s biggest releases this year and even if you’re new to the Pikmin franchise, now is a better time than any to join in on the fun. For those unaware of what Pikmin is all about, it’s Shigeru Miyamoto’s take on real-time strategy in a world shown from the perspective of inch-high explorers. Those explorers command a legion of tiny, but powerful Pikmin in order to conquer enemies and puzzles in a quest to save their home planet.

Like many first-party Nintendo titles, Pikmin appeals to your inner child and the newest entry to the franchise will star the original Red, Yellow, and Blue Pikmin but also introduces two new types to expand on gameplay strategies. The Rock Pikmin can be used to smash through glass walls or enemies’ exoskeletons, while the Winged Pikmin will be able to fly, carrying things above ground and lifting blockades to open up new paths.

The Story Mode will allow players to take control of three new characters: Alph, Brittany, and Charlie. The three are tasked with saving their home planet of Koppai from starvation while searching the planet of PNF-404 for nutritious fruit. Other game modes in Pikmin 3 include Mission Mode and Bingo Battle, which is a competitive multiplayer mode that pits you and a friend against each other on a variety of different maps in order to complete a line in a special Pikmin-themed bingo card.

And as a heads up for those in Europe, download Pikmin 3 from the Nintendo eShop between July 26 and September 21 and you’ll receive 30-percent off The Wonderful 101 when it’s released on the eShop.
