4A Games returned to Metro 2039 during gamescom Opening Night Live with another gameplay trailer, this time shifting the focus away from Hunter and onto the game’s mysterious new protagonist, The Stranger. The roughly two-minute “Renegade” trailer was captured entirely in-game and follows The Stranger as he infiltrates a Moscow controlled by the Novoreich.
When Metro 2039 was revealed in April, we learned that The Stranger is a recluse haunted by violent waking nightmares who is forced to return to the Metro after years in exile. He’s also the series’ first fully voiced protagonist. The latest footage gives us a little more insight into his past while showing him moving between stealth and all-out combat as he makes his way through Novoreich territory.
The trailer also gives us another look at the environments 4A Games is building with its proprietary 4A Engine. We see daily life inside Sevastopolskaya station before The Stranger heads onto the irradiated surface of Moscow. June’s gameplay trailer focused more heavily on Hunter and his authoritarian regime, so this is our best look yet at what actually playing as The Stranger will be like. I said after the original reveal that it looked like 4A Games hadn’t lost a step when it came to atmospheric horror, and this footage isn’t doing much to change my mind.
4A Games also revealed the first details for the Metro 2039 Collector’s Edition. Instead of just getting a statue or some other display piece, the centerpiece is a full-size replica of The Stranger’s battle-scarred Spartan helmet. Preorders aren’t open yet, but fans can register their interest now, with availability and pricing coming later this year.
Metro 2039 launches in February 2027 for PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The official site continues to list February 2027 without a specific release date.
