As promised, 4A Games has officially revealed Metro 2039, the next entry in the Metro series and the first since Metro Exodus launched back in 2019. The single-player FPS is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic this winter, and based on the reveal trailer, it looks like 4A Games hasn’t lost a step when it comes to atmospheric horror.
The game is set 25 years after nuclear war, with the underground factions of Moscow’s Metro now unified under the Novoreich, an authoritarian regime led by a new Fuhrer known as Hunter. Players take on the role of The Stranger, a recluse haunted by violent nightmares who is forced to return to the Metro he swore he’d never go back to. Unlike previous Metro protagonists, The Stranger is fully voiced, which should make for a more immersive experience given how story-driven these games have always been.
The reveal came through a 15-minute showcase stream that included interviews with members of the development team and a six-minute trailer featuring a mix of gameplay and real-time cinematics. It’s classic Metro, with claustrophobic environments, signature weapons, and the iconic wristwatch making an appearance during a tense mutant encounter.
It’s also worth noting that 4A Games, which was born in Ukraine and remains majority Ukrainian, has been developing Metro 2039 amid Russia’s ongoing invasion. The studio says the conflict has directly shaped the game’s story, with its themes focusing on choices, consequences, and the cost of securing a future.
