The man behind Polyphony Digital and the creator of the Gran Turismo series is getting his own documentary titled KAZ: Pushing the Virtual Divide. Kazunori Yamauchi isn’t just a game designer and producer behind the world-famous Gran Turismo games, he’s also the CEO of Polyphony Digital and a professional race car driver.
The documentary takes a look into Yamauchi’s passion and creative drive for the Gran Turismo series which is now 15 years old and will be seeing its sixth home console iteration released on December 6, 2013. The film will follow Yamauchi’s drive to challenge himself while pushing the virtual divide in his pursuit of perfection.
The original Gran Turismo was released on December 23, 1997 for the original Sony PlayStation and back then, its graphics were jaw dropping. Now, when you take a look at what’s coming with Gran Turismo 6, you’d think it couldn’t get any more realistic. But something tells us when Gran Turismo 7 inevitably comes out for the PlayStation 4, it will be as real as it can get. Since the Gran Turismo franchise has debuted, its games has sold over 70 million copies worldwide.
The series has also spawned the GT Academy, which takes virtual racers and puts them behind the wheel of real race cars. Previous GT Academy winners have gone on to have highly-successful careers in motorsports.
Kazunori Yamauchi himself campaigns a Nissan GT-R (seen above) in several races including the world famous 24 Hours of Nurburgring. In fact, his team captured the class victory in 2011.
