It’s been nearly seven years since Hellgate: London was first released for the PC on October 31, 2007 and the game could be making a comeback. Making an appearance on Steam Greenlight, Hellgate is looking to return to the U.S. having been operating as a free-to-play game in Korea for the last few years.
The story behind Hellgate: London is a tragic one, as the game had high expectations being developed by a team of former Blizzard employees, many of which worked on the Diablo series. After struggling to generate revenue, publisher Namco gave the game the axe in February 2009 before South Korean distributor Hanbitsoft picked up the worldwide publishing rights. The game was then relaunched as Hellgate: Resurrection but the version heading to Steam will be Hellgate Global, which includes the Tokyo expansion.
According to the game’s Steam Greenlight listing, Hellgate Tokyo continues the story of the London Resurrection and heroes will start in the Tokyo Base before venturing to new locations while progressing through the story. The expansion adds 24 new levels to the game.
A company named Redbana is the one behind the Steam Greenlight listing and is linked to Hanbitsoft, along with online game publisher T3.
