Founder and general manager of Eidos Montreal, Stephane D’Astous, has resigned from the company as of last Friday. D’Astous helped found the studio in 2007 and according to a statement to Polygon, D’Astous left due to irreconcilable difference between Eidos and Square Enix Europe.
Eidos Montreal is the mind behind the Deus Ex franchises and has been working on a reboot for the Thief franchise. D’Astous will be replaced by David Anfossi, who is the current studio head and producer for Deux Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: The Fall.
Square Enix has had a struggling year, with the resignation of its CEO Yoichi Wada and layoffs happening back in April. In May, Square Enix America’s CEO and president Mike Fischer stepped down, and last month the company announced leadership changes would be happening across all its subsidiary studios.
“Since last year’s financial short-coming performance of Square Enix Europe, we have had growing and divergent opinions on what needed to be done to correct the situation,” D’Astous said. “The lack of leadership, lack of courage and the lack of communication were so evident, that I wasn’t able to conduct my job correctly. I realized that our differences were irreconcilable, and that the best decision was unfortunately to part ways.”
