The gaming industry’s layoff trend isn’t slowing down. Eidos Montréal, the studio behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the Deus Ex franchise, announced today that it is reducing its workforce by 124 employees. The studio’s head, David Anfossi, is also departing after many years in the role.
In a post on LinkedIn, the studio attributed the cuts to “changing project needs,” adding that the layoffs impact both production and support teams. Eidos Montréal said the decision isn’t a reflection of the talent or dedication of those affected and that supporting impacted employees remains its priority. A transition plan for new studio leadership is underway.
This isn’t the first round of layoffs for the studio in recent years. Eidos Montréal, which is under Embracer Group, laid off 97 employees in early 2024 after Embracer canceled a new Deus Ex game that had been in development for about two years. The studio also cut 75 positions in March 2025. That means Eidos Montréal has let go of nearly 300 employees in roughly two years, which is a staggering number for a studio that had around 500 employees at its peak.
Anfossi had been with Eidos Montréal for years and oversaw the development of several notable titles, including Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. His departure, combined with the continued reduction in workforce, raises questions about the studio’s future direction. Despite these cuts, Eidos Montréal has been doing co-development work on titles like Fable and Grounded 2 for Xbox.
