Forty years after the original Dragon Quest launched in Japan on May 27, 1986, Square Enix says the series has now surpassed 100 million games sold across its 11 mainline entries and the many spin-offs that followed. The publisher marked the milestone with a short celebration video featuring series creator Yuji Horii, and it comes a few months after the original game was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in May.
The number arrives on the back of a busy stretch of remakes for the series. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake passed two million units in its first few weeks after launching in November 2024, and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake followed on October 30, 2025 to complete the Erdrick Trilogy in the same HD-2D style, with new story content and gameplay updates. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined then arrived in February as a full 3D remake of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, rebuilding Akira Toriyama’s character designs in a hand-crafted 3D art style with diorama-inspired environments, streamlined exploration, and a deeper story.
The 40th anniversary year still has a few releases left in it, starting with Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age on Switch 2 on September 24, which was announced during the anniversary livestream back in May. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World follows on December 3 on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC, and it already has a free demo covering the first chapter along with an early purchase bonus for anyone who buys by January 4, 2027. Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon Classic HD also recently released, bringing the series’ original Mystery Dungeon spin-off back in HD.
As for the next mainline game, Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams is still in development after Square Enix restarted the project under a new team structure and dropped its original subtitle, The Flames of Fate, during that same May stream. As I said ahead of the anniversary livestream, I’ve been waiting on Dragon Quest XII since the moment it was teased, and Square Enix still has not given it a release window.
