Santa Monica Studio is delaying God of War Laufey from February 16 to May 20, 2027, a little more than three months past the date it set at San Diego Comic-Con in July. The studio announced the change in a short statement, saying that since the reveal at June’s State of Play, it has been grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen, and that it doesn’t take for granted the trust placed in it to deliver an experience worthy of its fans. With that in mind, the studio decided to push back the release, saying it will use the extra time to put the finishing touches on the game and bring it to its fullest potential.

The new date keeps God of War Laufey well ahead of Sony’s January 2028 cutoff for new physical game releases, which is relevant because Santa Monica Studio confirmed a disc release back in July before it had announced any date at all. Preorders opened on September 29 with a physical Standard Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition, both carrying the Last Wish Armor Set, a Golden Leaves appearance for the cosmic cube Phranque, and an in-game resource pack as preorder bonuses. The statement doesn’t mention preorders or either edition, so there’s no indication anything has changed there beyond the date.

God of War Laufey follows Faye, Kratos’s wife, played again by Deborah Ann Woll, as she wakes after her funeral in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, and fights to protect the plans she made for Kratos and Atreus. At the same Comic-Con panel where the February date was announced, head of creative Cory Barlog confirmed another Kratos-led God of War game is in the works and will release after Laufey. The game remains a PlayStation 5 release, and Santa Monica Studio said it will be back with more updates soon.
