If you’ve got hundreds of hours in Conan Exiles like we do, Funcom’s eighth anniversary gift is going to land well. Conan Exiles Enhanced is a free Unreal Engine 5 upgrade launching on May 5, 2026, for everyone who owns the game on Steam. It’s one of those rare cases where a publisher is giving away an overhaul that would typically cost money.

Developed in collaboration with Inflexion Games, Conan Exiles Enhanced targets 60 FPS or higher across Low, Medium, High, and Ultra settings on most PCs and includes Steam Deck support. The bigger structural change is that the Exiled Lands and the Isle of Siptah are now unified into a single world, so players can freely travel between the two regions without having to choose one at the start of the game. In multiplayer, a single server can host both maps simultaneously, which is a significant change for anyone who owns the Isle of Siptah expansion. Other additions include multiple single-player characters per account, a revamped user interface, crafting that pulls ingredients from nearby storage and follower inventories, day one mod support with a refreshed Mod Dev Kit, and a client size reduced from 120GB down to 40GB.

The Joel Bylos quote in the announcement actually addresses the elephant in the room. “We know these upgrades are often sold at a premium or released as a separate, enhanced product, but we wanted to offer this for free to fans past, present, and future, as an anniversary gift and a token of our appreciation for their support,” said Funcom’s Chief Creative Officer. Funcom also confirmed that save transfers are supported, with Crom Coins, Bazaar items, DLC, and Twitch Drops all carrying over into the Enhanced version on Steam. We’ve enjoyed a lot of what Funcom has put out recently, including Dune: Awakening, so seeing the team go back and modernize a beloved game at no cost to existing players really helps to build long-term goodwill.

There are a few caveats worth flagging. Conan Exiles Enhanced is a PC Steam release at launch, so Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and console players won’t have access day one, though Funcom says it’s considering bringing the upgrade to those platforms later. The UE4 version, now rebranded as Conan Exiles Legacy, will remain available for players who want to stay behind, but it won’t receive new major content updates. The bigger thing to know is that merging the Isle of Siptah into the Exiled Lands required changing the island’s physical coordinates, which means bases on Siptah cannot be preserved in the update. If you’ve built anything you care about on Siptah, you’ll want to dismantle it and store the materials in your followers’ inventories before the official server downtime on May 4 at 8:00 AM Pacific (11:00 AM Eastern). Funcom has published a detailed FAQ covering every server and save migration scenario, which is worth reading if you’re on an official or private server.

Conan Exiles has long been one of our favorite crafting survival games, and a proper UE5 overhaul is a great way to get lapsed players back in and welcome new ones. Here’s hoping the console version gets the same treatment down the line.
