Paramount+ has shared the official trailer for Golden Axe, the animated comedy series based on SEGA’s 1989 arcade classic, ahead of its September 16 premiere. The series is an homage to the original beat ’em up, following legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, “who just won’t seem to stay dead.” Complicating the quest is Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities.
The voice cast features Matthew Rhys (The Americans) as Gilius Thunderhead, Liam McIntyre (Spartacus) as Ax Battler, Lisa Gilroy (Jury Duty) as Tyris Flare, and Danny Pudi (Community) as Hampton Squib, with Carl Tart voicing the villainous Chronos “Evil” Lait. Behind the scenes, the show comes from co-creators Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!), with Chandler serving as showrunner and Titmouse (Big Mouth) handling the animation.
Golden Axe was originally ordered as a 10-episode series at Comedy Central back in April 2024, but the show is instead premiering exclusively on Paramount+. It joins other game-to-screen projects in the pipeline, with the Street Fighter movie hitting theaters in October and an R-rated Bloodborne animated movie also in the works. As for the games themselves, the franchise has been quiet for a long time, with the last new entry being 2008’s Golden Axe: Beast Rider.
