Activision and Infinity Ward used the XBOX Games Showcase to give the first proper look at DMZ, the extraction mode returning as a full-fledged part of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The reveal builds on last week’s Modern Warfare 4 campaign and multiplayer details, with DMZ now positioned as what the studio calls the definitive Call of Duty extraction shooter rather than the side experiment it was in beta. Both the campaign and DMZ launch together on October 23, 2026.
Set in a large-scale conflict zone shaped by the events of Modern Warfare 4, DMZ drops players in solo or as a squad to loot, fight, negotiate, betray, and extract with whatever they can carry as off-the-books operatives recovering advanced military tech. The biggest change from the beta is persistence, as players now build out a Forward Operating Base, keep a persistent inventory, and develop separate Active Duty characters, each with its own loadout, backpack, and trait tree. Infinity Ward frames this as the extraction shooter’s longer hero’s journey, played out across many deployments rather than a single match.
Two systems anchor the new looting loop, starting with a 3D Printer that turns ingredients and recipes found in the world into gear like plate carriers and Killstreaks, with rarer finds unlocking printer upgrades. The Gunsmith has also been reworked around cash rather than cooldowns, with money earned in matches wired back to the FOB and spent to build weapons and add attachments. Each attachment raises the cost of the next, and high-value pieces like suppressors and thermal optics run more expensive, which makes killing another player and taking their weapon more valuable.
Progression runs on a few layers, led by an XP rank that unlocks stations, stash items, and printer recipes, and still pays out fully even if a run ends in death. On top of that sits the Boss Board, a roster of dangerous Lieutenants who spawn across the map and drop dog tag cases when killed. Those cases populate the board for a squad, but they are visible to everyone in the match, turning each one into a signal of where a squad is moving and a target other players will try to intercept at exfil.

For solo players, Infinity Ward added a tourniquet that always grants one self-pickup when downed, bringing the player back in a wounded state until they find a med kit or bandage to recover. A stealth meter gives an audio cue and a visual indicator as enemy AI start to notice the player, which can be frozen by breaking line of sight and ducking back into cover. The studio also rebuilt proximity chat with distance falloff, directionality, and interior reverb, and kept the FOB in third-person so squads can see one another and newer players can pick up its systems more easily.
The living world is meant to keep deployments unpredictable, escalating as players push by sending in higher-tier AI on helicopters and ground vehicles, including enemies that now chase players down roads and attack choppers with gunners riding along. Around that, DMZ layers Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, repairable trucks carrying UAVs, and an irradiated fallout zone that requires a gas mask or hazmat suit to loot. The map itself, called Hajin, is built with hidden spaces and locked areas the studio says reward exploration.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and DMZ launch together on October 23, 2026, across PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam and Battle.net. The release is an XBOX Play Anywhere title, playable across XBOX Series X|S and XBOX on PC at no extra cost.
