When we covered Fable’s fall 2026 target back in January, our headline carried a built-in asterisk: assuming no more delays. That asterisk just got cashed in. XBOX has moved Playground Games’ Fable to February 2027, and since the reboot already slipped once before, from 2025 into 2026, nobody should be shocked. The official line is about spreading the year’s launches out through the holidays and giving Fable what XBOX calls “the dedicated moment it deserves.”

The reasoning holds up once you look at the calendar. XBOX’s slate this year is loaded, with Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, Minecraft Dungeons II, and the recently announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Of course, XBOX, like many other developers and publishers, is going to do everything it can to stay out of the path of Grand Theft Auto VI this November, assuming that game also doesn’t get another delay. While we don’t have a release date for Gears of War: E-Day just yet, the game is getting its own Direct following the XBOX Games Showcase on June 7, so it’s very likely we’re getting a release date then.

Normally I’d be wary of a racing studio taking its first real crack at a sprawling open-world RPG, especially one that’s slipped this many times. But I’m not losing any sleep over this one. Playground Games has earned the benefit of the doubt over and over, and Forza Horizon 6 only made the case stronger. After about 40 hours with it for our review, I came away convinced this is a studio that knows exactly what it’s doing when it comes to making a fun game. I do believe the extra time is going toward making Fable better, not fixing some mess.

The wait comes with a peek, at least. XBOX says it’ll give players a major new look at Fable, along with the rest of its lineup, at the XBOX Games Showcase on June 7.
