PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) was one of the biggest selling points when Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro back in 2024, and it’s getting a significant upgrade starting tonight, March 16. Sony announced that a software update rolling out in phases beginning at 10:00 PM Pacific (1:00 AM Eastern, March 17) introduces broad support for the upgraded version of PSSR, delivering improved image stability, sharper fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles.

Previewed in late February, the upgraded PSSR takes a different approach to both the neural network and the overall algorithm compared to the original version. Image reconstruction is more precise, motion during gameplay is more stable, and developers have more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity. Resident Evil Requiem was the first game to ship with the upgraded PSSR when it launched last month, and now 11 more titles are adopting it: Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Beyond those titles, Crimson Desert will launch with the upgraded PSSR on March 19, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077 will receive patches in the coming weeks. Sony also noted that going forward, most new PlayStation 5 Pro titles will ship with support for the enhanced PSSR by default.

What’s particularly interesting for PlayStation 5 Pro owners is that you don’t have to wait for individual game patches to try it out. The system software update adds an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” option in settings that can be applied to any PlayStation 5 Pro game that already supports PSSR. Sony says results may vary by title, and the setting can be turned off if anything looks off, but many games should see noticeable improvements in clarity and stability.

Sony also confirmed that the technology behind the upgraded PSSR comes from its Project Amethyst partnership with AMD, and that AMD’s next FSR update will bring these advancements to PC players as well.
