Long-rumored, Horizon Steel Frontiers has officially made its debut at G-Star 2025, and it’s being touted as a new MMORPG launching on mobile and PC. Yes, a spinoff set in the Horizon universe isn’t going to be on a PlayStation console, as weird as that sounds. To make things even stranger, it’ll be playable on PC via Purple, NCSoft’s proprietary gaming platform. No word yet on whether it’ll head to Steam.
As for what Horizon Steel Frontiers is, the game is being developed by NCSoft, a veteran in the Korean MMORPG space with titles such as Lineage and Guild Wars 2 from subsidiary ArenaNet. Of course, Guerrilla Games is also involved in its development, as the teams look to reach a new audience with the Horizon IP. Set in the Deadlands, Horizon Steel Frontiers aims to deliver a distinct Horizon experience to players around the world, and while it will be cross-platform on PC and mobile, it is primarily being built for mobile devices, according to Guerrilla Games studio director and art director Jan-Bart Van Beek in the announcement video.
Where things get a bit confusing is that there have been rumors Guerrilla Games is working on its own multiplayer Horizon spinoff, which is likely to be available on PlayStation 5. It’s unclear where Horizon Steel Frontiers fits in all of this, or if it’s an additional effort to attract new players to the series. Either way, Horizon Steel Frontiers looks to be the franchise’s version of a Monster Hunter game. On paper, that sounds like a lot of fun, being able to group up with others to hunt giant machines. The Horizon franchise’s combat has always stood out as one of its strengths, and while it’s hard to say how it will play just by looking at videos, it appears that Horizon Steel Frontiers brings that style of gameplay to mobile devices.
No release date was announced for Horizon Steel Frontiers, so for now all we have is the announcement video, which is over 10 minutes long, and a separate gameplay trailer that shows nearly 3 minutes of footage.
One thing is for sure: PlayStation is making a push into the mobile market. Earlier today, Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble was announced as a mobile multiplayer shooter by Oh BiBi.
