Boy, this week has been a bit of a whirlwind for the Nintendo Switch 2. One of the most highly anticipated consoles in the history of gaming finally made its full debut on Wednesday during the Switch 2 Direct. The broadcast confirmed that the Switch 2 would release on June 5, 2025, with a starting price of $449.99 for just the console. At launch, a bundle will also be available for $499.99 with Mario Kart World—which is also being sold separately for $79.99. Originally, preorders in the U.S. were set to go live on April 9, but now Nintendo has confirmed to both IGN and GameSpot that preorders will be delayed. The reason is those amazing tariffs the Trump Administration is throwing around.
Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.
With all the backlash the Nintendo Switch 2 has already received for its pricing, especially since some games are going to be $79.99, it would be very difficult for Nintendo to convince U.S. consumers they need to pay even more for the console due to the tariffs. But Nintendo is also a company that’s in the business of making money, so there’s a certain limit to the costs it’s willing to eat.
Unfortunately, for us gaming enthusiasts who just want to know that we’ve secured a preorder for the launch date, we’ll have to wait a bit longer. Nintendo hasn’t announced a new day yet for preorders, and is probably waiting to see exactly what gets put into effect considering how unpredictable the Trump Administration has been. For now, we’ll have to wait and see when retailers will launch their preorders. Currently, the My Nintendo Store registration for the Switch 2 is still saying that the first batch of invitations will go out starting May 8, 2025.
