After a year of delays, lawsuits, and a public feud between Krafton and its now-reinstated founders, Subnautica 2 has had quite possibly the most chaotic road to Early Access in recent memory. Somehow, that didn’t slow it down. Unknown Worlds confirmed today that Subnautica 2 surpassed 1 million copies sold before Early Access even launched, just days after pre-purchases opened, and reached the No. 1 spot on Steam’s global top sellers charts across multiple countries.
The momentum carried straight into today’s launch. Subnautica 2 has already peaked above 465,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, which is one of the biggest opening days of 2026 so far. Xbox numbers aren’t tracked publicly, but with the game launching day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, the actual player count is significantly higher than what SteamDB is showing.
“The Early Access launch of Subnautica 2 marks the beginning of an adventure to chart the unknown deep alongside players worldwide,” said Fernando Melo, executive producer of Subnautica 2, in the announcement. The cinematic trailer that dropped on April 30 has surpassed 10 million views, and the gameplay trailer from May 9 has crossed 5 million, so the demand was clearly there.
Honestly, anyone who has been following the saga between Krafton and Unknown Worlds probably saw this coming. The Subnautica community is one of the most passionate in survival gaming, and the original sold over 18 million copies in its lifetime.
