Originally announced in June 2024, Steam Game Recording is now available to all users on the platform. The feature is a built-in system that allows users to easily create and share gameplay footage. Similar to features on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Steam Game Recording runs in the background, ensuring you won’t miss anything—so long as you remember to clip it. In response to feedback from the beta test, Game Recording now offers game-specific settings, quick capture hotkeys, advanced export options, and a session view, allowing users to view footage in the new Recordings & Screenshots manager with game-specific tags and data.
Users can select between Background Recording mode and On Demand Recording mode. The former continuously saves gameplay to a preferred drive with set limits. The latter is a more traditional manual start-and-stop mode. Players can also quickly pull up a replay in the Steam Overlay to review recent gameplay, which is helpful for identifying mistakes or re-reading missed dialogue. Steam Game Recording also includes light editing tools, allowing users to easily clip exactly what they want to share.
One of the standout features is game-added markers in timeline-enhanced games. These markers notify Steam when relevant events occur and are marked on the timeline with details specified by developers, making them easy to identify. Players can also add their own markers to the timeline, making it easy to jump back to key moments. Best of all, Steam Game Recording also works on the Steam Deck.
